The Office of Continuing Education serves the college by offering specialized off-campus programs at a tuition rate that is the same for in-state as well as out-of-state students. These experiences enhance our students’ options to participate in creative educational offerings that contribute to global awareness and unique opportunities to study out of the classroom.
Innovative Months: Summer Off-Campus Experiences
Innovative Month programs are short-term (typically 5 weeks) off-campus programs held during summer sessions and administered through the FLC Office of Continuing Education. Unique programs are created and led by dedicated FLC Faculty to broaden a student’s global awareness by participation in a quality out of classroom experience either abroad or in the United States. Academic coursework provides 4 to 7 credits in study conducted during travel and/or on campus before and after travel. Learning is deeply enhanced by the off-campus experience, and program costs include most travel expenses and tuition at a rate of $160 per credit hour for both in-state and out-of-state students. Out-of-state students can cover many of the program expenses with tuition savings, and the Native Tuition Waiver applies for qualified students.
Summer 2012 programs include study programs to Ethiopia, Tanzania, France, Israel, Cuba, Las Vegas, Ghana, Costa Rica, and a cruise to the Western Caribbean. Academic focus is unique to each program and reflects the creative excellence of the faculty member’s unique discipline. These courses are announced during the fall and winter terms for the coming summer sessions, and students may register during that time.

National Student Exchange

The National Student Exchange provides students with the opportunity to study–at in-state tuition rates–at nearly 200 member colleges and universities in 48 states, three U.S. territories, the District of Columbia, and six Canadian provinces.
FLC Students interested in participating in National Student Exchange must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 (4.0 scale)
- be enrolled as a full-time student at the time of application and in the term prior to exchange
- be in good standing (academic, financial, and social/behavioral)
- be committed to participating in the National Student Exchange program
- have completed 30 college credit hours before beginning exchange*
- have completed all required Transitional Studies (TRS) courses prior to beginning exchange *
* Please note: applicants can apply for exchange prior to completing 30 credits and/or TRS Courses but all credits must be completed prior to exchange

Fort Lewis College offers Exchanges, Direct Enrollments and Study Abroad opportunities around the world to individual student participants through the International Programs Office. GS 250 and GS 251 (International Studies) are pre-departure courses required before participation in any of these programs.
International Exchanges
Fort Lewis College has a number of reciprocal exchange agreements with partner institutions in Europe, Asia and Latin America. Students participating on these exchanges pay their home school tuition and fees and receive transfer credit for their semesters abroad. Students are responsible for their individual travel and living expenses. Financial aid is available to eligible Fort Lewis College students. Tuition waivers may also be used. Incoming international students from partner schools must apply through their own international programs offices for any financial assistance.
Direct Enrollments and Study Abroad
Direct enrollments and Study Abroad programs offer alternative locations and curriculum choices to Fort Lewis College students when our current exchange schools do not meet their needs. While participating on these programs, students pay their tuition directly to approved institutions or third party providers.
Faculty-run international programs are offered by individual departments and through the Continuing Education Innovative Month programs.
Students participating in any official Fort Lewis College program/international experience will be considered “in residence.” Credits earned through such programs are not subject to the limits of the Senior Year Transfer Policy. |
