This course traces the development of the United States policy toward the American Indians including the policies inherited from European colonizers to those of today.  It analyzes policies developed by the federal government, Indian peoples’ legal rights, and their hopes for tribal survival.  The course documents assimilation and segregation and the present philosophies of pluralism and self-determination.
