MU 131 - Music Theory I This course teaches you a basic written analytical context for the music you perform and listen to. You learn the fundamental building blocks of Western Common Practice tonal music, including rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic elements, as well as a survey of two-voice counterpoint. Non-music majors/minors may take course with instructor approval only.

Program Restriction: Must be a declared major, pre-major, or minor in Music, Music Performance, Music Business, Music Education, Musical Theatre, or Music Minor.
Notes: A theory placement exam will be administered the first day of class to help determine your current skill set. You may be advised to enroll in MU 120 – Music Fundamentals instead if you don’t yet have the skill set to be successful in this course.
