REQUIREMENTS FOR A MINOR IN NATIVE AMERICAN and INDIGENOUS STUDIES:

No more than one course from the major department will count toward any minor. A student majoring in any discipline other than Native American and Indigenous Studies may complete a minor in Native American and Indigenous Studies upon satisfactorily completing the following requirements:

Required Core Course:

NAIS 110 - Introduction to Native American and Indigenous Studies Credits: 4

Choose one course from the following:

NAIS 123 - Native American History Credits: 4
OR
NAIS 280 - Contemporary Issues of Native Nations Credits: 4

Elective Requirements:

Choose 3 additional courses (12 credits) from the following list. Two of the three must be numbered 300 or above.

ANTH 358 - Native American Gender Issues Credits: 4
NAIS 100 - Fundamentals of Navajo Language I Credits: 4
NAIS 101 - Fundamentals of Navajo Language II Credits: 4
NAIS 107 - Bala Sinem Choir Credits: 1 - must be repeated for 4 credits in order to count as an elective course requirement
NAIS 176 - Native American Literature Credits: 4
NAIS 215 - Intertribal News Writing Credits: 4
NAIS 315 - Advanced Intertribal News Writing Credits: 4
NAIS 317 - Indigenous Peoples in Film and Media Credits: 4
NAIS 322 - Native American Religion and Spirituality Credits: 4
NAIS 323 - Indigenous History of the Southwest Credits: 4
NAIS 344 - Native American Oral Traditions Credits: 4
NAIS 450 - Native American Heritage Preservation Credits: 4

TOTAL REQUIRED FOR MINOR - Credits: 20

Note: ANTH 364 , ANTH 348 , HIST 329 , NAIS 335 and NAIS 190/390 courses may be used to fullfill one of the electives upon approval by the NAIS Chair.

Note: At least 9 credits must be numbered 300 or above.
