Biology Major with Teacher Licensure


Students can add the required education courses for teacher licensure to their major course of study in place of free elective courses. Students must adhere to the Baccalaureate Teacher Licensure Requirements. Students must be admitted to the Teacher Licensure program to enroll in 400-level ED prefix courses. Students must subsequently be admitted to Student Teaching.

Complete a total of three (3) upper division courses from the list below. One (1) of the courses must be at the 300-level. Two (2) of the three (3) courses must have labs.

  • Complete one (1) additional upper division biology course. Courses may be chosen from any offered by the department or accepted as transfer biology courses with the exception of Independent Study BIO 499 ).

STEM, GIS, or Other Elective Course:


  • Complete one (1) approved course from the approved STEM, GIS, or other courses (listed in the auxiliary requirements). Duplication between the auxiliary courses and this requirement is not allowed.

STEM, GIS, or Other Courses:


Complete one (1) additional course from the approved STEM, GIS, or other courses list below. Duplication between the major electives and this requirement is not allowed.

a Check course description for minimum grade in prerequisite course(s) required to enroll in this course.

b A minimum of 15 credits of coursework must be completed in the combined areas of AH/HI/SS.

c This Liberal Arts Core course is required by the major. To complete the degree in the specified total credits for graduation, students must use this course to fulfill the requirements of both the Liberal Arts Core and the major.

d This course fulfills both a Major requirement and a Liberal Arts Core requirement. Credits for this course are counted in the Liberal Arts Core section of the curriculum listing. These credits are not counted in the Major Requirements total.

e BIO 496  - Priority for admission to Senior Seminar is given to students who have met all prerequisites. Students should plan their prerequisite courses accordingly.

g The following courses require a grade of C- or better for continued progression through the degree program:  BIO 106 , BIO 113 , BIO 260 , BIO 208  OR BIO 270 , and BIO 245 . The following courses require a grade of B- or better for continued progression through the licensure program: ED 222 ED 341 , and ED 342 . 

h Students double majoring in Biochemistry and Biology with an area concentration in Cellular and Molecular Biology may take either the senior seminar sequence in Chemistry (CHEM 496  andCHEM 497   or Biology BIO 496   and BIO 497  ).

j BIO 376   is only taught in the summer.

k Advanced Topics courses will vary annually, and specific topics will be identified in advance of each semester’s registration. An advanced topics course of similar content, with or without lab, cannot be repeated (e.g. Bio 425 – Advanced Topics in Molecular Biology of Disease and BIO 427 – Advanced Topics in Molecular Biology: Molecular Biology of Disease Lab could not be repeated).

l Course has a lab component and is allowed to count toward the “Two of the three courses must have labs” requirement.

m Majors may meet the MATH 121  and/or MATH 221  auxiliary requirement with a higher-level math calculus course.

n A course used to meet the core requirement (BIO 323  or BIO 325   or BIO 326 ) cannot also be used to meet the Major Electives requirement. Additional courses from this list may be taken for the Major Electives requirement

Note: Among the total credits required for graduation, at least 36 credits must be upper division (300- and 400-level) courses.

Note: Students completing the Liberal Arts Core in fewer than 33 credits will have additional free electives.
