REQUIREMENTS FOR A CERTIFICATE IN GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS):

A student majoring in any discipline may complete a certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) upon satisfactory fulfilling the core and elective requirements.

Core Courses:

GEOG 310 - Introduction to Computer Mapping and GIS Credits: 4 ^g
GEOG 315 - GIS Programming and Web Mapping Credits: 2 ^g,p
GEOG 350 - Intermediate GIS: Vector Credits: 3 ^g,p
GEOG 400 - Advanced GIS: Raster Credits: 3 ^g,p

GIS Capstone Course:

Complete one (1) course.

GEOG 480 - Internship in GIS Credits: 1-3 ^{g, p}- minimum one (1) credit
GEOG 499 - Independent Study Credits: 1-3 ^g,p- minimum one (1) credit

Certificate Electives:

Complete Option A or Option B.

Option A:

GEOG 325 - Introduction to Remote Sensing Credits: 4 ^g,p

Option B:

ENGR 205 - Introduction to Geomatics and Engineering Surveying Credits: 3 ^g,p
MATH 121 - Pre-Calculus Credits: 4 ^g,p

TOTAL REQUIRED FOR CERTIFICATE - CREDITS: 20

^g A grade of C or better will be accepted for the certificate.

^p This course has a prerequisite. You must complete the prerequisite course(s) before enrolling in this course. Sometimes you are given a choice or a list of prerequisites to complete.

Note: Students whose placement is CALC 121 or transfer in MATH 121 will have MATH 113 waived. Students whose placement is CALC 221 or transfer in MATH 221 will have MATH 113 and MATH 121 waived. Please email gradcheck@fortlewis.edu for waiver to be processed on the degree audit.

Note: At least 50% of the coursework toward the certificate must be earned at Fort Lewis College.
