HIST 313 - Wilderness in America This course traces the history of the concept of wilderness on American public lands beginning in the Colonial period in the1600s with wilderness defined as a dangerous, unsettled area, to the establishment of the federal wilderness preservation system in 1964. Students will read history, literature and science and will come to understand difficult issues in managing wilderness areas today.
