NAIS 225 - Native American Languages

Researchers estimate that of the 6000+ Indigenous languages spoken prior to European contact, fewer than 300 are spoken and are unlikely to persist into the next 100 years. This course will explore the linguistic diversity of Native American Languages and the historical, political, and cultural contexts affecting their survival. Additionally, the role of language in maintaining cultural identity and prospects for the future are assessed.
