The Gender and Women’s Studies Major and Minor degrees approach the study of gender - including masculinity, women’s equality, human sexuality, and human sexual orientation - from a deeply trans-disciplinary perspective. Informed by feminist and other critical theories inside and outside of academia, the Gender and Women’s Studies curriculum is committed to honest and productive examinations regarding the key role of gender in social, political and economic arenas. Through their study of gender, students will analyze how the intersection of race, class, sexuality and other identities serve to construct and maintain global and local dominant frameworks of inequality and serve to limit access to resources and power. Central to this Gender and Women’s Studies program is the recognition of the value of diversity, a concern for social justice and an exploration of unique and innovative ways of performing gender, conducting research, and effectively navigating local and global environments. The major is designed to fit squarely within a liberal arts tradition as well as to encourage and prepare students to be agents of change in their personal and professional lives.
