The Department of Modern Languages offers programs of study in Spanish and French. Through the five skills areas of reading, writing, speaking, comprehension, and culture, students learn to communicate effectively in a range of environments while learning about Spanish and French-speaking countries, literatures, and traditions. We encourage our students to study abroad in their choice of program and country, and support learning with an active language lab, computer-based language programs, music, film, and a range of cultural events. Every summer there is at least one Innovative Month program offered which provides the opportunity for students to travel and study with their classmates and faculty abroad.
Students may complete a minor in French or Spanish or choose from different major options, including the Spanish - U.S. Latino Studies, Spanish - Latin American Studies, Spanish - K-12 Teaching, and a more traditional major in Spanish. Students interested in completing a major in French may pursue a self-constructed French major.
Coursework in Navajo is also offered through the Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) Department.
