There are three undergraduate majors in Teacher Education:
Early Childhood Education : The Early Childhood Education major focuses on a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to teacher preparation. This major is for students who plan to earn a Colorado teaching license in Early Childhood to teach in public or private schools with young children Preschool through 3rd Grade and children birth to 8 years old. All students will spend at least 800 hours in early childhood school settings, including one full semester in their senior year as a full time student teacher.
Elementary Education : The Elementary Education major focuses on a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to teacher preparation. This major is for students who plan to earn a Colorado teaching license in Elementary Education to teach in public or private schools with young children Kindergarten through 6th Grade. All students will spend at least 800 hours in elementary school settings, including one full semester in their senior year as a full time student teacher.
Educational Studies : The Educational Studies major offers a flexible, generalist degree, with a wide range of opportunities for students interested in the educational field but not drawn to classroom teaching and does not offer a teaching certificate. The major will prepare graduates for positions in youth programs, charter schools, science or history museums, art centers, or environmental or community education related organizations. All students will spend 600 hours in an approved internship.
Teacher Licensure: Teacher Licensure programs are incorporated into many majors at Fort Lewis College that allows students to earn a Colorado teaching license and a degree. These majors are listed below and can result in being able to teach English, Math, Science (Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry), or Social Studies (History) in grades 7-12 or teach Art, Music, Physical Education, Theater, or Spanish in grades K-12. All students will spend at least 800 hours in field study in public school settings including one full semester in their senior year as a full time student teacher.
TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Minor : The TESOL minor prepares students to teach English as a second or foreign language in local, national and international educational contexts. The courses provide students with a deeper understanding of the English language, needs of diverse learners, and culturally responsive instruction in English in a wide variety of contexts. The TESOL minor will prepare students with marketable skills that will make a difference in the education of children and adults in a range of settings.
