Major Requirements: Credits: 65

Choose one (1) course:

A course used to meet the core requirement (BIO 323  or BIO 325  or BIO 326 ) cannot also be used to meet the Major Electives requirement. Additional courses from this list may be taken for the Major Electives requirement.

Senior Seminar and Thesis:

Major Electives:

You may complete the elective course requirements for this major in one of two ways:

1) Complete the General Biology Electives section shown below.

2) Complete the requirements of an area of Concentration (Cellular and Molecular Biology or Environmental and Organismal Biology). If you complete a concentration, the concentration will be noted on transcript.

General Biology Electives:

Biology Elective Courses:

Complete a total of three (3) upper division courses from the list below. One (1) of the courses must be at the 300-level. Two (2) of the three (3) courses must have labs.

Additional Biology Elective Course:

  • Complete one (1) additional upper division biology course. Courses may be chosen from any offered by the department or accepted as transfer biology courses with the exception of Independent Study BIO 499 ).
STEM, GIS, or Other Elective Course:

  • Complete one (1) approved course from the approved STEM, GIS, or other courses (listed in the auxiliary requirements). Duplication between the auxiliary courses and this requirement is not allowed.

Cellular and Molecular Biology Concentration:

Cellular and Molecular Biology Courses:

Cellular and Molecular Biology Elective Courses:

Complete a total of two (2) upper division courses from the list below. CHEM 311  AND CHEM 312  will satisfy as one (1) course.

STEM Course:

Complete the STEM course listed below. Duplication between the auxiliary courses and this requirement is not allowed.

Environmental and Organismal Biology Concentration:

Environmental and Organismal Biology Elective Courses:

Complete a total of three (3) upper division courses from the list below. One (1) of the courses must be at the 300-level. Two (2) of the three (3) courses must have labs.

Additional Biology Elective Course:

  • Complete one (1) additional upper division biology course. Courses may be chosen from any offered by the department or accepted as transfer biology courses with the exception of Independent Study BIO 499 ).
GIS Course:

Complete the GIS course listed below. Duplication between the auxiliary courses and this requirement is not allowed.

Upper Division Requirement - Credits: 36

Among the total required courses, at least 36 credits must be upper division (300- and 400-level) courses. This major will require additional courses to meet the upper division requirement.

Free Electives - Credits: Variable

TOTAL REQUIRED FOR GRADUATION - CREDITS: 120

a Check course description for minimum grade in prerequisite course(s) required to enroll in this course.

b A minimum of 15 credits of coursework must be completed in the combined areas of AH/HI/SS.

c This Liberal Arts Core course is required by the major. To complete the degree in the specified total credits for graduation, students must use this course to fulfill the requirements of both the Liberal Arts Core and the major.

d This course fulfills both a Major requirement and a Liberal Arts Core requirement. Credits for this course are counted in the Liberal Arts Core section of the curriculum listing. These credits are not counted in the Major Requirements total.

e BIO 496  - Priority for admission to Senior Seminar is given to students who have met all prerequisites. Students should plan their prerequisite courses accordingly.

f Check course description for prerequisite course requirements.

g The following courses require a grade of C- or better for continued progression through the degree program: BIO 106 , BIO 113 , BIO 260 , BIO 208  and BIO 245 .

h Students double majoring in Biochemistry and Biology with an area concentration in Cellular and Molecular Biology may take either the senior seminar sequence in Chemistry (CHEM 496  and CHEM 497 ) or Biology (BIO 496  and BIO 497 ).

j BIO 376  is only taught in the summer.

k Advanced Topics courses will vary annually, and specific topics will be identified in advance of each semester’s registration. An advanced topics course of similar content, with or without lab, cannot be repeated (e.g. Bio 425 – Advanced Topics in Molecular Biology of Disease and BIO 427 – Advanced Topics in Molecular Biology: Molecular Biology of Disease Lab could not be repeated).

l Course has a lab component and is allowed to count toward the “Two of the three courses must have labs” requirement.

m Majors may meet the MATH 121  and/or MATH 221  auxiliary requirement with a higher-level math calculus course.

n A course used to meet the core requirement (BIO 323  or BIO 325  or BIO 326 ) cannot also be used to meet the Major Electives requirement. Additional courses from this list may be taken for the Major Electives requirement.

Note: Among the total credits required for graduation, at least 36 credits must be upper division (300- and 400-level) courses.
