Music Education Major


REQUIREMENTS FOR A BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE WITH A MAJOR IN MUSIC EDUCATION:

Audition/Performance/ Recital:


  • All students majoring in music will be required to pass an entrance audition and theory placement exam.

  • Music majors must also successfully pass an individual performance exam during the SECOND semester they are enrolled in MU 209. This is a juried exam occurring within the student’s applied music course that term. Most often this will occur during the second semester of the sophomore year.

  • Students must present a half recital of at least 30 minutes duration during the senior year.

Applied Music:


Complete a minimum of seven (7) credits of applied music courses (MU 109(A-I), MU 209(A-I), MU 309(A-I), MU 409 (A-1)). At least three (3) credits must be upper division. One (1) applied course is required each semester of residency except during the semester of student teaching. g

Major Ensembles:


Complete a minimum of seven (7) credits of ensemble courses. At least three (3) credits must be upper division. One (1) ensemble course is required each semester of residency except during the semester of student teaching.

Music Literature/Concert Attendance


Attendance at scheduled recitals and concerts and at regularly scheduled listening labs is required each semester.

Chosen in conjunction with your academic advisor to assure that the total graduation credit requirement for this program is met.  

Note: Students completing the Liberal Arts Core in fewer than 33 credits or who have met a prerequisite or required course through transfer, examinations, or assessment of prior learning will have additional free electives.

Upper Division Requirement - Credits: 36


Among the total required courses, at least 36 credits must be upper division (300- and 400-level) courses. This major may require additional courses to meet the upper division requirement.

Course Information


Prior to course registration, students should review all courses for prerequisites, minimum prerequisite grade requirements and minimum class standing.

This course fulfills both a Major Program Core requirement and a Liberal Arts Core requirement.  It may also be used to fulfill a Major Program elective.  To complete the degree in the specified total credits for graduation, students must use this course to fulfill the major requirements.  If the course is noted as an elective option, it may be used to satisfy a Major Program elective requirement and a Liberal Arts Core requirement.  Credits for this course are counted in the Liberal Arts Core section of the curriculum listing but are not counted in the Major Requirements total.

e Students who demonstrate piano proficiency are not required to complete these courses.

g Music majors must obtain at least a C- in all music (MU) courses that count towards their major.

h All students majoring in music will be required to pass an entrance audition and theory placement exam. Music majors must also successfully pass an individual performance exam during the semester they are enrolled in MU 229 . This is a juried exam occurring within the student’s applied music course that term. Most often this will occur during the second semester of the sophomore year.

i All music majors must satisfy a piano proficiency requirement before taking MU 349  or MU 423 . Students with adequate skills may petition to take the examination and may receive credit for the appropriate courses. Those with less background must take a piano placement test and in their freshman year enroll in the proper course in the piano class sequence MU 103A MU 104 MU 203  and MU 204   Successful completion of this sequence with a grade of A or B also satisfies the piano proficiency requirement.

Note: Admission to Teacher Education Licensure Program required for all 400-level education courses.

Note: Undergraduate students must adhere to the Baccalaureate Teacher Education Licensure Program   and meet the academic standards for undergraduate classification.

Note: Post-baccalaureate students must adhere to Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Licensure Requirements   and meet the academic standards for Post-Baccalaureate classification.3

TOTAL REQUIRED FOR GRADUATION - CREDITS: 120


All curricular requirements for the Liberal Arts Core and at least one major must be met. Many students choose to use free electives to complete the requirements for a certificate, minor or teacher licensure.

A minimum of 15 credits of coursework must be completed in the combined areas of AH/HI/SS.

Students must achieve a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00 and a minimum grade point average of 2.00 for those courses accepted to meet the requirements for the major, a certificate or minor.

A minimum of 30 credits must be completed at Fort Lewis College. College-sponsored off-campus academic experiences are considered “in residence.”
