The TESOL certificate will prepare students to work with learners developing English as an additional language, either in the U.S. or internationally.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE TESOL CERTIFICATE

A student majoring in any discipline may complete a TESOL certificate upon satisfactory fulfilling the core and elective requirements.

Note: A grade of C or better is required in all courses required for the certificate.

Core Courses:

ED 333 - Southwest Language Immersion for Teachers Credits: 1-3
Note: 3 credits of ED 333 are required for certificate completion.
ED 335 - Linguistics for Educators Credits: 3
ED 434 - Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Learners Credits: 3
ED 484 - Secondary/K-12 CLD Placement Credits: 1

Cultural Consciousness Choice

Complete one course from the following. Substitutions may be approved with permission.

BL 316 - Cultura y Sociedad Credits: 3
BL 220 - The Immigrant Experience Credits: 3
ED 447 - Instructional Equality Credits: 3
NAIS 333 - Indigenous Identity Credits: 3
SOC 279 - Race, Ethnicity, Gender, Class [LAC-SS] Credits: 3
SOC 375 - Sociology of Education Credits: 3

TOTAL REQUIRED FOR CERTIFICATE - CREDITS: 13

Prior to course registration, students should review all courses for prerequisites, minimum prerequisite grade requirements and minimum class standing.

Note: At least 50% of the coursework toward the certificate must be earned at Fort Lewis College.
