Creative Writing Certificate

The Creative Writing Certificate provides students the opportunity to earn a credential for exploring their love of and interest in creative writing. This certificate will be of particular interest for students who would like to devote elective course choice to Creative Writing and would like a certificate acknowledging their efforts. The certificate will also communicate to employers students’ knowledge of narrative, wordsmithing and editing, and the ability to use language to communicate compellingly.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CREATIVE WRITING CERTIFICATE

A student majoring in any discipline may complete a Creative Writing certificate upon satisfactory fulfilling the core and elective requirements.

Note: A grade of C or better is required in all courses required for the certificate.

Complete two (2) of the following courses:

ENGL 174 - African-American Literature [LAC-AH] Credits: 3
ENGL 175 - Women’s Literature [LAC-AH] Credits: 3
ENGL 176 - Native American Literature [LAC-AH] Credits: 3
ENGL 177 - U.S. Latinx Literature [LAC-AH] Credits: 3
ENGL 180 - Literature of the Environment [LAC-AH] Credits: 3
ENGL 232 - British Literature since 1800 [LAC-AH] Credits: 3
ENGL 231 - British Literature to 1800 [LAC-AH] Credits: 3
ENGL 245 - Survey of American Literature I: Beginning to 1865 [LAC-AH] Credits: 3
ENGL 246 - Survey of American Literature II: 1865 to present [LAC-AH] Credits: 3

Creative Writing Choices:

ENGL 464 - Capstone Creative Writing Credits: 3
ENGL 465 - Images Literary Magazine Practicum Credits: 1-6 credits per semester Minimum Credits: 3

TOTAL REQUIRED FOR CERTIFICATE - CREDITS: 15

Prior to course registration, students should review all courses for prerequisites, minimum prerequisite grade requirements and minimum class standing.

Note: At least 50% of the coursework toward the certificate must be earned at Fort Lewis College.
