Students must take five additional courses for a minimum of 20 credits. Two of these courses must be from outside the GWS prefix. A minimum of 12 credits must be upper division. Students may apply two approved internship and/or practicum courses for no more than 8 credits total.

Please note that some anthropology, art, and history courses are cross-listed with an identical GWS course. Students must not repeat the same course under different subject prefixes (i.e., ANTH 355  & GWS 355  are the same course).

Practicum or Internship Opportunities:

Students may sign up for an internship or practicum experiences in any field, as long as the project undertaken is related to gender, sexuality, and/or women’s studies. Example courses are shown below. A maximum of 8 credits of practicum/internship may count in the Disciplinary Explorations section of the major. Students MUST receive approval from the Gender and Women’s Studies Coordinator before signing up for internship or practicum credit.

g Topics courses may count when the specific topic offered in a particular term is approved by the GWS Coordinator. The topic must be centrally related to gender, sexuality, feminist analysis, and/or women’s studies, e.g., ENGL 380  or ENGL 425  .

i SOC 320  may be taken for 4 credits to fulfill a GWS major requirement when the project is approved in advance by the GWS Coordinator.

Note: Among the total credits required for graduation, at least 36 credits must be upper division (300- and 400-level) courses.

Note: Students completing the Liberal Arts Core in fewer than 39 credits will have additional free electives.

Note: Students who have met a prerequisite or required course through transfer, examinations, or assessment of prior learning will have additional free electives.

Note: Any gender related 190/390 course may be applied to the Disciplinary Explorations requirements if approved by the Coordinator of the Gender and Women’s Studies Program.
