HIST 262 - Toler/Persecuti in Middle Ages Is persecution an ever-present function of organized society, or does it have specific historical catalysts? We will investigate this question using examples from early Europe, looking closely at the development of anti-Semitism as well as changing attitudes in authorities’ and “ordinary” people’s perceptions of marginal groups – such as gays, heretics and witches – from the rise of Christianity to the Reformation.
