The Pre-Law Minor is an interdisciplinary law minor for students who are interested in attending law school, who plan on pursuing legal related careers, or who want to learn more about different areas of the study that will students in their professional careers or in post-graduate schooling. The Fort Lewis College Pre-Law Minor provides students with the opportunity to study a broad range of law-related courses and to acquire and hone skills essential to successful completion of a law degree. The courses in the minor enhance the critical thinking and analytical reasoning, improve oral and written communication, and advance reading comprehension skills, all skills needed for success in law school. For students not planning on law school, the minor will provide them with practical information and exposure to legal issues and other topics that will be useful in their careers and personal lives.

At the heart of the pre-law program rests the College’s learning outcomes: learning as inquiry, critical thinking as problem-solving, and communication as an intellectual contribution. As a highly interdisciplinary minor, pre-law encourages students to use modern methods to analyze, interpret, and apply a diverse array of information and data. Moreover, much of the coursework in pre-law requires students to synthesize, evaluate, and apply information to solve complex legal problems as well as hypothetical (yet realistic) cases. Last, communication rests at the foundation of pre-law: its coursework requires students to communicate both orally and written, balancing the complexity and diversity of the minor program’s course offerings.
